ITINERARY

This classic cruise brings together glorious cities along one of the world‘s most beautiful stretches of rivers on a trip through the heart of Old World Europe. This quintessential cruise along the beautiful Danube begins in the “Three Rivers City“ of Passau at the confluence of the Inn, Ilz and Danube rivers and takes you all the way to the “Queen of the Danube“ — the capital city of Budapest, which straddles the river with its hilly ‘Buda‘ featuring Fisherman‘s Bastion & castle district over to the flat ‘Pest‘ side with its iconic Parliament building.

Along the way travel through four of Europe‘s most important countries — Hungary, Slovakia, Austria & Germany. Explore years of history and culture in the Imperial cities of Budapest, Vienna & Bratislava as well as the UNESCO protected Austrian Wachau Valley — blanketed with rolling hills, flourishing vineyards and picturesque villages. Day 1: Passau

Depart: 6 pm

This afternoon, embark on the vessel and get settled into your cabin. This evening, enjoy a Welcome Cocktail, followed by a specially-prepared Welcome Dinner.

Day 2: Regensburg

Arrive: 8 am - Depart: 8 pm

This morning, your river vessel arrives in one of Germany’s best-preserved medieval cities. On the morning tour, immerse yourself in the historic atmosphere of this unique town, which boasts architecture from many different centuries and a bridge that was built in the 12th century.  In the afternoon, choose between a visit to the 600-year-old Weltenburg Abbey, which is situated on the banks of the Danube and houses the oldest monastic brewery in the world, and a trip to the 18th century Thurn and Taxis Palace with a stop at their traditional brewery and beer tasting. This evening, enjoy a special Bavarian theme on board with regional delicacies and live traditional music.

Day 3: Passau - Linz

Arrive Passau: 8 am - Depart: 10 am | Arrive Linz: 4:30 pm - Depart: 10 pm

Today, those interested in excursions have all three options. A morning walking tour through the Baroque centre of Passau will provide insight into the history of the town. Alternatively, you can take part in a full-day excursion in a comfortable tour bus, which will visit the Mozart town of Salzburg and the lake district of the Salzkammergut. Both excursions end in Linz, where you will return to your ship. The guests who do not take the bus to Salzburg can spend the afternoon on their own or take a guided tour through this Upper Austrian town before the ship weighs anchor in the evening.

Day 4: Melk/Emmersdorf - Weißenkirchen - Vienna

Arrive Melk/Emmersdorf: 8 am - Depart: 12 pm | Arrive Dürnstein: 2 pm - Depart; 5:30 pm | Arrive Vienna: 10 pm

This morning presents an opportunity to visit the beautiful Baroque Benedictine Abbey of Melk, which sits on a rocky outcrop overlooking the Danube. This Baroque jewel is filled with beautiful frescoes created by pre-eminent artists of the 18th century, and a magnificent library with priceless manuscripts.

During lunch on board, the ship continues to Dürnstein, a picturesque wine growers’ village located in the heart of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Wachau Valley. Explore the village with a local guide or choose an excursion to a local vineyard to sample some of the region’s famous Grüner Veltliner wines. The ship arrives in Vienna later this evening and remains overnight.

Day 5: Vienna

There is much to see in Imperial Vienna: its Imperial Palaces, Museums Quarter with historic and contemporary buildings displaying works by Egon Schiele, Gustav Klimt and other artists, the impressive buildings along the Ringstrasse, St. Stephen’s Cathedral and the famous Vienna State Opera among many others. This afternoon perhaps venture to Schönbrunn Palace, the sumptuous summer palace and gardens of Empress Maria Theresia and the Habsburg empire. In the evening opt for the “Sound of Vienna” and listen to the “Alt Wien” orchestra play popular pieces from Vienna’s classical era. The vessel departs Vienna in the early hours.

Day 6: Bratislava

Depart Vienna: 3 am | Arrive Bratislava: 8 am - Depart: 10 pm

Wake up this morning in Bratislava, a jewel on the Danube and the capital of Slovakia. Explore the city on your own or with a guided optional tour through the city. See the home of the Slovak Philharmonic Orchestra, the old city walls, the summer residence of the archbishop and the current residence of the president of Slovakia. In the restored old town, view Michael’s Gate, the Primatial Palace and St. Martin’s Cathedral, a former coronation cathedral for Hungarian kings.

This afternoon continue to explore the city at your own place or choose between two exciting optional shore excursions. Travel outside the city to the beautiful Schloss Hof Palace and Estate – the Imperial country estate of the Habsburgs acquired by Empress Maria Theresa. Or explore the history of wine in Hungary along the Little Carpathian wine route, set among the Carpathian mountain range. Visit a local wine cellar and enjoy a tasting of the local wines.

Day 7: Esztergom - Budapest

Arrive Esztergom: 7 am - 8:30 am | Arrive Budapest: 1 pm

Relax on board as the vessel makes its way to Budapest, Hungary. For those interested in exploring the Hungarian countryside, spend the morning visiting Esztergom and its Basilica dedicated to Saint Mary, and Szentendre, known for its art galleries and museums. After lunch, explore the beautiful Hungarian capital of Budapest. Uniquely straddling the Danube river, the Buda side with its Fisherman’s Bastion and the Pest Side with its famous Hungarian Parliament building, are connected by the beautiful Chain Bridge. An evening cruise onboard your AMADEUS vessel along the illuminated skyline, accompanied by a folklore show of music and dance, is a perfect ending to your visit.
