Danube Classics

Visit: Engerhartszell (Passau), Vienna, Esztergom, Budapest, Bratislava, Krems, Melk, Wachau, Engerhartszell (Passau)

Wouldn't it be nice to experience several cities and landscapes in one single trip, and to discover that any one of these destinations would have made the trip worthwhile?  This is exactly what you'll experience on the almost 3,000 kilometre stretch of the Danube between the Black Forest and the Black Sea.  In irrepressible Bratislava, Renaissance meets socialism, and science fiction thrives alongside Baroque.  Budapest - so makestic yet so quirky - has an improvisational feel, with its "ruin pubs" and former scholls and factories converted into offices.  And then there is the Hungarian language!  Finally Vienna.  Resembling an ornate pink confectionery creation, this is another city whose mixture of oriental, German and French influencces make visitors fall in love with it.  In fact, one trip to Vienna is not enough: you'll want to keep coming back to discover more.  An you'll probably want to keep coming back for the Waschermaserln, Vienna's famous marzipan-stuffed apricots, too.

 Day 2: Vienna, Austria

Arrive 1:00pm

This is a real highlight of your Danube cruise: Vienna, the capital of Austria with that extra-special something. The locals sound as though they are singing when they speak, and it is customary for certain business owners to address their regular customers with their full title. That’s just the way things are done here. With its wealth of museums, galleries, palaces and castles, plus the state opera and many theatres, the city enjoys a lively cultural scene all year-round. The Viennese are proud of their city – and rightly so!

An overnight stay here in the city will be one of the main highlights of your Danube Classics river cruise. You may decide to put on the glad rags and head out for a classical music concert. Schoenbrunn's is particularly impressive. But whatever you choose to do, you can enjoy in the knowledge your stylish and comfortable river cruise ship is waiting for you back in port.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 3: Vienna

Depart: 6:30pm

Spend another day in Vienna.  Rich in culture, gastronomy and good looks, this grand city is wonderful at any time of year. Picture Baroque palaces, enormous beautifully-tended gardens hidden behind unassuming facades, the grandest of coffee houses where you can practically sense the historic figures of yesteryear putting their heads together. From Freud to Klimt, Beethoven to Strauss, this intellectual and musical juggernaut will undoubtedly be one of the highlights of your Danube cruise. And that's without even mentioning the famous Sachertorte.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 4: Esztergom - Budapest, Hungary

Arrive Esztergom: 8:00am  |  Depart Esztergom: 10:30am

Once the capital of Hungary, Esztergom sits right on the bank of the Danube and can be admired directly from the river. The castle tower and mighty basilica form an amazing sight, rising up from the steep bank of the Danube. This is a view you’ll definitely want to photograph during your Danube cruise. So, it’s a good thing that A-ROSA ships have such pleasant sun decks!

Arrive Budapest: 3:00pm

Do you know how many bridges Budapest has? There are seven in total – and they span the river between the neighbourhoods Buda and Pest. The most well known is probably the Széchenyi Chain Bridge. Take a look at Budapest’s imposing structures for yourself as you cruise down the Danube. And if you go out onto the sun deck of your cruise ship, you’ll also have an unobstructed view of Budapest’s famous parliament building. The perfect way to experience a stunning city.  Tonight you'll spend the evening here in Budapest. Why not head out for dinner and explore some of the city's famous gastronomy? With excellent regional wines and cuisine, there's much more to the city than its famous Goulash!

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 5: Budapest

Depart: 4:00pm

As views from the river go, Budapest is pretty hard to beat. Straddling both sides of the water, the 'Pearl of the Danube' is chock-full of grand imperial buildings, dramatic history and contrasting scenery. On the Buda side of the Danube, you'll discover a landscape of rolling hills and gloriously over-the-top buildings, the impressive Hungarian Houses of Parliament amongst them. While over in former Pest, you'll find a more buzzy, bourgeois feel, an eclectic mix of cafes, bars and restaurants perfectly complementing lavish Buda. Besides the good looks, the history books also have a lot to say about this city. While it retains its Golden Age-glamour, its more recent past is everywhere you look too. As you explore the city, you'll find poignant reminders of its place in WWII and the 1956 Uprising including bullet holes and shrapnel marks as well as the moving Shoes on the Danube memorial.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 6: Bratislava, Slovakia

Arrive: 9:00am | Depart: 3:30pm

Bratislava, home to approximately 450,000 inhabitants and located on the left bank of the Danube, is a young capital city – the youngest in Europe, in fact. Throughout the old town, you’ll see traces of the Austro-Hungarian Empire wherever you go. This leisurely city of baroque and rococo, palaces and palisades, and art and coffee houses is a perfect place to wander around, marvel at impressive sights, relax and unwind.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 7: Krems - Melk - Wachau

Arrive Krems: 8:00am  |  Depart Krems: 8:30am

Krems an der Donau is not far from the Austrian capital of Vienna. The city is part of the Wachau, a stretch of the Danube valley and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Your Danube cruise will take you through Krems, passing through the Wachau on the way to and from Vienna.

Arrive Melk: 12:30pm  |  Depart Melk: 1:00pm

A visit to Melk, the ‘Gateway to the Wachau’, brings you to the Danube Valley UNESCO World Heritage Site, where you can marvel at glorious landscapes. And no trip to the Wachau would be complete without a trip to Melk Abbey, a Benedictine monastery. This is a region where towns and landscapes appear to exist in perfect harmony.

Cruise through the Wachau

You are about to enjoy a real treat for the senses as you experience the Wachau up close. You will be mesmerised by the famous Danube valley between Melk and Krems. Taking in this fascinating river landscape as you stand on the sun deck of your cruise ship is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. It is no wonder that the Wachau is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This really is an absolute must-see, so so put down the book, grab a coffee, and let the scenery unfurl in front of you.
