The Tour

This city tour will introduce you to the the most important sights of the Austrian capital. As we drive around the famous 'Ringstrasse', Vienna's main boulevard, we pass by the State Opera, the Museums of Fine Art and Natural History, the Parliament building, the Burgtheater (National Theatre), the City Hall and the University. The highlight of this programme is the visit to Schonbrunn Palace where we take a tour of some of the most magnificently decorated rooms. We return to the city centre, passing by Belvedere Palace, where you will have the opportunity to end your tour, or you can choose to continue to the State Opera House, where the tour ends.

The Tour

Your tour will start with an early pickup in central Vienna once you meet your driver/guide. Travel west toward Salzburg and enjoy the scenery of the UNESCO-listed Wachau valley while your driver helps you learn about this popular, touristic area. After breakfast, which is not included in this tour and is at your own expense, the tour progresses into another UNESCO World Heritage gem, the Salzkammergut region whose lakes and mountains had an important role in the movie ‘The Sound of Music’. The Salzburg arrival is planned around noon. Your guide will wait for you in Salzburg starting a walking tour around the UNESCO-protected heritage- Old Town. Along the way, you will see the famous landmarks, such as the Cathedral, Mozarteum, and St Peter’s Cemetery. As you wander around the cobbled street of Getreidegasse and learn important facts about the Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart as the most famous figure in Salzburg history, his statue will appear in front of you. Before we take you up to the imposing fortress Hohensalzburg looming over the city, Mirabell Palace and its gardens will offer the backdrop experience of the famous ‘Do Re Mi’ scene from The Sound of Music. As the one and a half-hour tour comes to an end, you can feel free to take approximately two hours to explore the city on your own. Take in the atmosphere of Mozart’s hometown as you stop for lunch. After the two-hour break, rejoin your driver for a relaxing trip back to Vienna through the scenic countryside before the final drop-off at your hotel in the evening.

The Tour

Begin your adventure through Salzburg’s old town at the Mirabell, which along with its beautifully landscaped gardens is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Pass the Mozarteum Music Academy and the Marionette Theatre, which for a century has been producing marionette performances of Mozart’s operas. Continue to the Markart Square and see the State Theatre, the beautiful baroque Trinity Church and Mozart’s Wohnhaus, where Wolfgang Amadeus lived for many years. Cross the River Salzach and enjoy wonderful views of the city. Follow the river along part of the old fortifications to the Hellbrunn Palace, a delightful example of early baroque architecture, and enjoy a brief photo stop to capture the beautiful gardens and fountains. On the way back to the city centre, pass Frohnburg Castle, which was the Von Trapp family home in the Sound of Music and Nonnberg Abbey, which is located beneath the imposing Hohensalzburg Fortress. Re-enter the old city through Sigmund Gate, which still looks remarkably impregnable. Back in the heart of Salzburg; pass the Great Festival Hall and Old University, the famous Horse Pond, and the picturesque Getreidegasse shopping street as well as the ancient St Blasius Church. The tour finishes close to the Cathedral and former palace of the archbishops at Mozart Square, where a bronze statue was erected in his honour.

The Tour

Relive the making of the 1965 award winning movie 'The Sound of Music‘ in and around Salzburg as you take a tour of many of the famous filming locations and learn not only about the background story of the movie but also the history, culture, and the social and historical contexts of the area in the late 1930s. See the Mirabell Palace and gardens, where Maria and the children sing Do-Re-Mi and Residenz Square, which Maria crosses by bus from Nonnberg Abbey – where the real life Maria and Baron von Trapp were married in 1927 – on her way to the Trapp Villa singing I have confidence in me. The Rock Riding School is a particularly significant location as the real life Trapp family sang there before they fled Austria following the Nazi takeover. In the film, they sing Do-Re-Mi, Edelweiss and So Long, Farewell in a memorable scene. Leopoldskron Palace was used as the Von Trapp family home and while the gazebo used for the famous ‘I am 16 going on 17' scene was here in the film, it is actually at the Hellbrunn Palace. Head to the countryside around Salzburg to visit locations such as the village of St Gilgen on Lake Wolfgang, which features in the opening credits, and the church at Mondsee, where the wedding scene was shot.
